’Twas the Night Before Ironman Texas

’Twas the night before Ironman, down in The Woodlands so still,
Not a ripple on Lake Woodlands, not a breeze, not a thrill.
The bikes were all racked in transition with care, In hopes that fast splits soon would be there.
The athletes were nestled all snug in their beds,
While watts, pace, and nutrition danced in their heads.
With tri kits laid out and alarms set just right,
They whispered, “Stay calm… just get through the night.”

When out on the course there arose such a clatter,
They sprang from their pillows—“What’s possibly the matter?”
Away to the window they flew in a flash,
Heart rate now higher than after a race-day bike clash.
The moon on the water cast a nervous glow,
On wetsuits and goggles all lined up below.
When what to their overthinking minds should appear,
But confidence rising… replacing the fear.

“Relax,” said a voice, both steady and wise,
“You’ve done all the work—this is your time to rise.
The long rides, the brick runs, the swims at sunrise,
Tomorrow’s your victory—go claim your prize.”
“Now breathe easy, athlete, you’re stronger than doubt,
This race isn’t something to fear or to figure out.
Just swim smooth and steady, let rhythm take hold,
You’ve practiced this countless times in the cold.”
“Then hop on your bike—keep effort in check,
No heroics too early, no need to over-spec.
Fuel like you’ve practiced, stay patient and smart,
The run is where you’ll show your heart.”
“And when miles feel heavy and legs start to fade,

Remember the promise you quietly made—
To finish this journey, no matter the test,
Because deep down you know—you’ve earned this quest.”
The athlete breathed deeply, the tension now light,
Replaced by a calm, quiet, confident might.
They slipped back to bed with a smile now in place,
No longer afraid of tomorrow’s big race.
And just before sleep took control of their sight,
They whispered with peace—“I’m ready. Goodnight.”
